The ‘Roots of Tomorrow’ project came about through the FESPA Foundation, with Digidelta an official partner of the initiative. Each year, the FESPA Foundation mobilises international printing industry partners to contribute products, materials, and services in the months leading up to the FESPA Global Print Expo in a sustainable manner.

Digidelta recently used its BIOND Bio-Print Film P HT BF 90 White Matt film to produce a set of wall graphics for classrooms at a primary school in South Africa.

For its 2026 edition, the initiative took on the theme of the ‘Big Animal School’, centred around a collective effort to rebuild classrooms in South African primary schools. Digidelta’s role was to both design and produce educational wall graphics for the under-renovation Batau Primary School.

Due to the classroom setting where the graphics would be installed, this posed an additional challenge for Digidelta. Strict rules and regulations meant it was limited to only using materials and consumables that ensure the printed applications would be suitable and safe in this environment.

With more than 40 years’ experience in the printing sector, coupled with far-reaching knowledge of print materials and hardware, Digidelta was ideally placed to support. After evaluating the project and how to deliver the best possible quality, the company’s expert team at its Torres Novas site in Portugal settled on BIOND Bio-Print Film P HT BF 90 White Matt.

Part of Digidelta’s BIOND range of bio-based printable films, the product is free from plasticisers and has a 90-micron thickness, permanent high tack adhesive and a bubble-free liner. Together, these features ensure high stability during printing and place the product as an ideal solution for a wide range of promotional applications, including interior wall graphics. In addition, the film carries an EN†13501-1:2018 reaction-to-fire classification as proof of its safety for use across various indoor environments.

However, material was only part of the equation, with Digidelta also tasked with using hardware that would deliver high-quality output. Having served as a Mimaki distributor in the Iberia region for almost 25 years, Digidelta knew immediately where to turn for the most effective solution.

The company opted for the Mimaki UCJV330 print and cut UV LED inkjet printer, the flagship UV model from Mimaki that can print on media up to 1mm thick and as wide as 1.6m with the 130 model or 1.6m on the 160 machine. Other features include a maximum cutting speed of 300mm/s and a range of colour options across various inksets.

In terms of inks, to meet the strict criterion of printed applications inside classrooms, Digidelta chose to run with Mimaki LUS170 inks. These carry the key UL Greenguard Gold certification, regarded as one of the most demanding standards for low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in sensitive environments, including spaces where children are present.

After the graphics were produced in-house by the expert team at Digidelta, they were shipped to the 2026 FESPA Global Print Expo, where Digidelta exhibited, and will be sent on to the school in South Africa ready for installation in classrooms later this year.

Each Batau classroom is dedicated to one ‘Big 5’ animal and a specific educational focus. The Lion Classroom focuses on leadership and confidence; the Elephant Classroom wisdom and strength; the Leopard Classroom agility and creativity; the Rhino Classroom strength and authority; and the Buffalo Classroom teamwork and resilience.

‘We wanted each classroom to feel educational and inspiring, rather than simply decorative,’ said Fábio Costa, Marketing Manager at Digidelta. ‘Each animal theme represents different qualities such as teamwork, creativity and leadership, helping create an engaging environment for students.’

NUtec Digital Ink handed over donations in the form of buffs made from repurposed textiles, as well as pencils, erasers and 2026 calendars, to the FESPA Foundation during the Sign Africa Cape Town expo. The event was held from 11-12 March.

The FESPA Foundation has extended its programme to the Western Cape, and will be visiting schools and providing gifts, so that learners can see what printing is about. As NUtec is based in Cape Town, the donation aligns well with the programme, as they too are looking to partner with schools in Cape Town.

‘We recently identified three schools in Cape Town, so this would be an ideal opportunity to demonstrate to those schools what the print industry and what the FESPA Foundation is all about,’ said FESPA Foundation executive director Steve Thobela ka Mdlalose.

Martine Goodchild, NUtec Digital Ink marketing manager, added, ‘We will continue to support the FESPA Foundation’s vision for South African school children in under-resourced areas and look forward to getting more involved in schools within our community.’

The FESPA Foundation team returned to Batau Primary School in February to further support the school. The foundation handed over art and stationery supplies, which were kindly donated by NUtec Digital Ink. NUtec packaged paints and canvases in repurposed printed fabric samples which were turned into art supply totes.

Steve Thobela ka Mdlalose, FESPA Foundation’s executive director, emphasised that transparency is central to what the Foundation does: ‘There are so many charities that people can donate to, but how do you know if the gift that you donated actually gets to those in need? The FESPA Foundation pride ourselves on the fact that if something is donated to us for a school purpose, we assure the donor that they will see their product or donation being used at the school.’

Group content and events manager Michela Marcantonio from FESPA’s UK head office joined the team for the school visit. Thobela ka Mdlalose said, ‘It’s always good for staff members from the head office to see what we do. Although we do share information with them, there’s nothing like being present at the school to see the difference being made.’

‘I was honoured to visit Batau School in Limpopo, where FESPA donated a ‘parachute’ game for all classes to enjoy, a popular activity in UK schools. The game uses a large, circular, multi-coloured parachute with handles and can be used for a variety of group activities. We hoped it would be a meaningful contribution, as it’s a great way to help children develop coordination, teamwork and motor skills,’ said Marcantonio.

‘The children were in the middle of recess when we arrived and were clearly delighted to see us. They were eager to try the game and it was wonderful to see their excitement and joyful energy as we played together. During my visit, it was also a pleasure to meet the school’s dedicated staff, including Headmistress Mokabane, whose warmth, laughter and welcoming hugs left a lasting impression.’

‘I was particularly interested to learn more about the upcoming projects the FESPA Foundation team are fundraising for, including the development of five themed classrooms. These will help support students who are currently learning in classes of more than 60 children.’

National Screen & Digital Supplies (NSDS) will showcase its DTF-textile, DTF-UV and DTF-flatbed solutions at the FESPA Africa and Sign Africa Expo, being held at Gallagher Convention Centre from 9-11 September5, 9am-5pm.
